[Savage40] Using a 1280x1024 external lcd monitor with a T20

Hello,

First, thanks to the hackers here for work on the savage driver for
Linux. I appreciate it!

I'm a new owner of a Thinkpad T20, running X.org 6.8.2. (via Mandriva
2005, which generally works great on it). 

I've been Googlin' for hours and can't figure out what seems to be
simple:

I want to be able to use my external 1280x1024 LCD at that resolution,
and switch back and forth between that setup and using laptop screen
directly (at 1024x768) fairly easily. 

With my attempts so far, they end up the same resolution. 

It would be cool to use both screens at once with something like the
"MergedFB" feature, but I'll settle for being able to see the larger
resolution at all. :)
