don't use savagefb.  It doesn't get along with the savage X server.

The savage module was only very recently pushed to the kernel, so it
won't show up in any kernels except the most recent from kernel.org or
Andrew's tree.  If you want to use the DRI you can either install the
binary snapshots from the DRI project:

or build the most recent drm, mesa, and xorg from cvs:
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building

you need to use drm/mesa/xorg from cvs.  see above.
