[Savage40] DRI on Savage/IX-MV

Savage DRI is not enabled in the X server by default for version
6.8.2. The kernel DRI is only one ingredient, necessary but not
sufficient. Try to move to X.org 6.9 RC4. It works on my IBM
ThinkPad T23 with a SuperSavage/IXC 64.
The new Ubuntu 6.04 development tree has modular X 7.0.0 RC4.
Here, Savage DRI is enabled by default, I think. Moreover, the
"savage.ko" module should be already present, too.
You can try if direct rendering works by downloading the daily
live CD. There is already a relatively stable milestone release
out there which got released last week.
