[Savage40] SuperSavage (ThinkPad T23) and xv overlay

Hi everyone!

I have an IBM Thinkpad T23, which has a SuperSavage graphics chip. On
this, gentoo is installed, with stock xorg-x11, which is version
6.8.2-r6.

I'm not at all interested in any 3D stuff, i.e. OpenGL and dri and
whatnot are not needed. What I _do_ want, though, is xv-overlay for use
with mplayer (or any other movie player, for that matter). Using mplayer
-vo xv works, but there is a slight problem: When there is (I guess this
is the right word) panning, i.e. the picture as a whole moves from side
to side, it looks as though the player (or the driver or the graphics
adapter) is unable to move the picture as a whole, and there is some
horrible jumping motion going through the whole picture. As in it is cut
horizontally, and the top part moves first, then the lower part.

A good example to show this behaviour is the teaser for Ice Age 2 which
can be found at
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/ice_age_2/largeteaser.html

So I'm wondering. Is mplayer doing something wrong? Or am I using the
wrong driver and I need that non-standard driver from CVS even though I
need no 3D? Or is the supersavage chip simply not able to do
average-quality video playback?

I tried using that xvidix thing mplayer has, but the savage module
for that doesn't work, so I'm assuming it only works on savage, not
supersavage.
