I was having a similar problem as Carl. My X was slow and most of the 
windows were appearing at odd places, top of the screen, etc... My 
solution was the reverse though. Vesa reported lightly less than 32Mb, 
and X reported 32768 exactly. I had to specify VideoRam 32768 explicitly 
for it to work.
