What do you mean by that?  Do you mean it comes up OK, but gradient 
backgrounds show color bands instead of smooth shading?  That's very 
different from saying "it won't run 24 bit".

The gradient banding at depth 24 is a known problem that has been fixed 
in the X.Org tree.  I don't know when Debian will switch to X.Org, but 
it is inevitable.  XFree86 is essentially dead.
