I have installed the Debian XFree86 => Xorg upgrade which includes DRI from http://www.nixnuts.net/files/binary/ and it doesn't seem to work quite right. The "savage" DRM module supposedly works with my card (the PCI ids match up) and the Xorg savage driver loads and reports this error:

>(II) SAVAGE(0): 8844 kB of Videoram needed for 3D; 8192 kB of Videoram available
>(EE) SAVAGE(0): Insufficient Videoram available for 3D -- Try a lower color depth or smaller desktop. For integrated savages try increasing the videoram in the BIOS.

Rebooting does not help, the screen remains blank even through the BIOS and GRUB. Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log over SSH, DRI claims to have loaded successfully. Does anybody know what the problem is?

The error message says it all. The Savage/IX in the T22 has exactly 8MB
of video RAM built-in to the chip. It cannot be expanded. If the X.Org
DRI support requires 9MB of video RAM, then the IBM T22 will NEVER run
3D, no matter how small you make the screen.

You will have to live without DRI on that laptop.
