do you get an output on the vga port?  It sounds like the LCD is
getting turned off for some reason.  are you able to start X at a lower
res with the load "dri" line commented out?  what about starting X and
switching to a lower res with ctrl-alt-+/-. are you using the bios to
set modes or not?
