Optical illusion.  Remember that, even though glxgears is generating 490 
frames per second, your Thinkpad screen is only being refreshed 60 times 
per second.  That means you're only seeing one out of every 8 frames.  
At 144 fps, you're seeing one out of every 3 frames.  If the sequence of 
wheel rotations were 8 frames long, for example, it would appear to be 
completely stopped at the faster rate.

It's the same effect you get when looking through a rotating fan blade 
at a flourescent light bulb.
