Ok.  if glxinfo tells you direct rendering is enabled, it is.  your log
should say it is as well.  With 16 MB depth 16 or depth 24 should be
possible, although at depth 24, you don't have much room for textures. 
Supersavages are also somewhat slower since command DMA and AGP seem to
lock them up, so they are stuck with the slowest paths until someone
figures out how to fix them.
