The Savage chipset doesn't have 3D hardware acceleration.

Debian "etch" 4.0 will also use the X.org server.  I have updated some
of my less critical systems to the pre-release version of etch and it
seems pretty decent.  It also converted my XFree86 configuration
automatically without breaking it (although it did need a little editing
to fix up font paths).

There is also http://www.backports.org/ which supplies some backports
of newer software for Debian stable.  Although it looks like they are
currently on X.org 6.9 instead of 7.0.
