OK I am back,m just installed Debian Etch, Xorg version 7.0 running the savage 
driver.
glxgears no longer gives a print out of frame rate but the gears are stopped 
so must be a multiple of frame rate.
glxinfo direct rendering: No.

So any advice on how to improve it from there will be welcome.
